Our Story

Kera was built by a cosmetic chemist who was losing her hair

Not by a marketing agency. Not by a venture-backed wellness brand. By one woman with a thinning ponytail and a chemistry degree.

The morning that started Kera

Chloe Vance was 42, standing in her shower in Phoenix, Arizona, staring at a softball-sized clump of her own hair stuck to the glass door. She'd already spent hundreds on Olaplex, K18, and Nutrafol. Her dermatologist's $400 blood panel had come back "perfectly normal." She'd cried in the salon chair when her stylist told her she had to cut four inches off.

What she didn't know then — what almost no woman knows — was that her own municipal water was the culprit. Aggressively treated with chlorine. Heavily loaded with dissolved calcium. Hitting her scalp every single morning under heat for ten years.

As a former cosmetic formulation chemist, she had the background to test her own water and work out what was happening. The calcium was binding directly to the keratin in her hair shaft. She named it the Mineral Mascara Effect. The hair wasn't falling from the root. It was being coated in a microscopic shell of rock and snapping cleanly at the mid-shaft every time she brushed it.

Why we built our own filter

Chloe looked for a solution and the market was a joke.

On one side: cheap Amazon filters that clogged in two weeks and tanked water pressure to a trickle. On the other: "luxury" influencer brands charging $148-165 for the same single-cartridge design wrapped in better packaging. The KDF-55 media — the actual active ingredient — costs roughly the same for every manufacturer. The $125 markup was going into TikTok seeding budgets, not better chemistry.

She built Kera to be the filter she would have wanted: 20 stages, 4 functional pillars, real KDF-55 chemistry, no influencer markup. The same active media as Jolie and Primal, engineered better, sold at a quarter of the price.

Our promise

  • Real chemistry, not aesthetic theater. KDF-55, calcium sulfite, activated carbon — named on the package, traceable to the materials science.
  • No luxury markup. $39.99 entry price. Replacement cartridges at $16.99 on subscription. The same filtration density as a $165 brand.
  • 60-day money-back guarantee. If the drain clumps don't dramatically decrease, we refund every cent. No return-shipping nonsense.
  • We tell you what we don't do. We don't claim to remove fluoride. We don't claim to soften water via ion exchange. We tell you exactly what our media neutralizes and why.

What's next

Kera is a one-product company, on purpose. We could expand into haircare products, supplements, scalp serums — every adjacent line a competitor sells. We don't. Because the whole point of Kera is that you stop spending money on those products and let the routine you already own start working again.
